What bait casting fishing reel to use (Round or Low Profile) for Inshore Pier Fishing.?

Hi,

I’m planing to buy a new Bait-casting reel but I’m not sure what to buy Round or Low Profile. I’m planing to use this for Inshore Pier fresh water fishing or maybe on a fishing boat for Salmon fishing too. I want something I can put my rod in a rod holder that is attached to the Piers or boat railings. I saw couple of Anglers in our area ‘Pier’ and they are using Rounded ones. If I’m going to get a Rounded ones can use this also for offshore fishing too? I just want to make my money’s worth by buying just one good reel that can do both. What reel would recommend base on your choice above whether Round or Low Profile if you have a budget of $200. I heard a lot of good things for Low Profile reels but I’m not sure if it can handle Big Salmons.

First, yes low profile reels can handle salmon just fine. It just matters if you have a better quality baitcaster. Lower end ones are going to flex under the tension from the pressure of the fish. Also, lower end reels tend to have lower quality drags that aren’t going to hold up.

For pier fishing, it’s almost always going to be more beneficial to have a round baitcaster as opposed to a low profile. The reason for this is because rounds tend to have more line capacity and bait clickers. Bait clickers (line alarms) are nice to have when pier fishing because it will let you focus attention on other things while fishing as opposed to having to literally constantly watch your rod. I’ve know people who have lost rods over the side of a pier because they got a take down from a large fish. It’s not pretty…it downright sucks! For salmon fishing from a boat, a round is generally preferred as well. The thing with boat fishing for salmon, especially in the ocean, is going to be the necessity for line capacity. In a river, there’s not too far a salmon can run, but oceans are a little different.

The abu garcia ambassadeur series are good all around reels at a very affordable price. Most of their reels in the 5000 and 6000 series have bait clickers and they will hold enough line for most applications..

If you’re looking for a low profile reel in the sub $200 range, then I would take a look at the Shimano Curado 300. They are a higher capacity low profile reel that has enough performance qualities that will handle just about whatever you can toss at it. They retailed for 249, but are on sale for 199 at most places. I wouldn’t recommend getting the Curado E (the newly released green curado). They aren’t proven and are rumored to not be as good as the curado D (grey in color), Other than that, there’s the Abu Garcia Revo INSHORE, a higher capacity higher end reel. It has good reviews.

what causes backlash on casting reels? is there a setting i can work with? do i need to use heavier lures? weights? Lighter/heaveir line?
i have an abu garcia ambassador red from walmart, using 20 pound test line…it was like, $100 bux.

The drum is turning faster, than the line is going out of the rod tip, Thus a bow in the line it snags together, then backlash,s, Cure, practice, Put your thumb on the line on the spool,drum, to slow the drum, As the line go"s out. Thus no backlash but a shorter cast. So cast over,and just past, your target, Start slowing the spool, with your thumb 3/4 of the way to the target, This will let the lure,bait, drop on to the target, It takes lots of practice to become good at this, But allow"s the most accuret cast you can make with spinning rods posible. So practice,practice, &, practice

Also how does the different types of fishing line effect casting with baitcasting reels?

In part is less line friction with smaller diameter lines but it also is the rod(action & length),reel(spool design) and weight of lure or weight used for casting!
Any properly set up rod n reel will be able to cast some distance but what are you looking for?
With the advent of the braids we can put heavier lb line with smaller diameters on reels which can increase casting distance.

every time i loosen up the spool so that the jig will go far, the spool overruns and knots up

I assume this is a baitcasting reel. You need to adjust the braking properly for the size/weight lure your using.
If the reel is directly out of the box. First, tie on the lure you are going to fish with. Then hold the rod at a 45 degree angle. With the bait reeled up to the tip, release the spool so the bait falls to the ground Keep your thumb on the spool so you don't over-run. Adjust the brake knob on the side of the reel so that the bait falls to the ground and the spool stops at the same time the bait hits the ground. You are then ready to cast. Try not to cast directly into the wind, it will create a birds nest. Practice this way until you become more proficient with using your thumb. Then you can adjust the brake to your liking. This is the best way to start. Asjust it that way everytime you change your lure.

What is the best casting rod for steelhead and salmon?

I live in Washington and need to pick up a casting rod for steelhead this winter. I bought a nice Shimano Tekota reel, the 500LC. I'll be using it out on my drift boat mainly.

Stick with All Star, Fenwick or G-Loomis like this 9'9" heavy action with a long handle for extra leverage and balance. Since you are fishing from a boat, you might even consider a 10'6" model good for 2-8 oz baits and 10-40 lb test.

Rounded bait casting reel recomendations?

Hi Everyone,

I’m looking for a rounded bait casting reel that I can cast and retrieve from ‘off-shore (like a pier)’ or ‘in-shore’ that has a clicker and a line counter too. I was gearing towards ‘Shimano Tekota’ or Abu Garcia Ambassadeur. Daiwa Sealine is in my list too but I don’t have any reviews about this reel. Just saw this reel from our local bait shop.

I’m looking for something sturdy, with corrosion resistance, light and can function just like my low profile reels (in case I’m lazy to bring both reels).

Any recommendation or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like you prefer level wind reels. Please keep in mind that level winds will limit your casting distance if heavier test mono lines were used. Level winds got more moving parts that could trap saltwater and sand. Normally, those extra moving parts won’t bother you much. However, if you got a huge, strong fighting fish on the other end of the line and the reel was under high stress, those extra parts will become a handicap. The reels you mentioned aren’t exactly light weight reels anyway. If I were you, I’d spend about the same amount of money and go straight for smaller conventional reels which will handle small/medium tunas with relative ease. I’d prefer reels like Daiwa SL20SH or Penn 525 Mag. Both reels are very easy to cast and could cover long distances much easier than level winds. They could handle heavier lures/sinkers without any hiccups while still being able to fly line live baits. You’ll get a lot more reel for about the same money.

If you insist on level winds, I’d avoid Abu Garcia reels because their drags simply aren’t as strong as Shimano Tekota’s or Daiwa Sealines. I’m not saying Abu Garcia aren’t good reels. They’re just not in the same caliber range as Shimano Tekotas or Daiwa Sealines that’s all.

Tekota got a little edge over Sealine level winds. Tekota will fly line live bait fish or cast light weight objects easier and further than Sealines. Tekotas work a little smoother than Sealines too. Their drag strengths are about the same with Tekota being a bit smoother. I’ll let you decide if those minor differences are worth the difference in price or not. By the way, I’d pamper Shimanos. I’m not pampering them because of their price. I’m pampering them because they will look absolutely scary after they got enough scratches on them.

As for corrosion resistance, all reels mentioned above did a pretty good job. If you rinse your reel off after each use, they’ll all last a very long time. Less time was required to clean Daiwa Sealines though. If you don’t like cleaning fishing reels after each use, I’d recommend that you consider Newell reels. You only need to toss the whole reel into a bucket full of freshwater, let the reel soak for about an hour and you’re done.

Abu-Garcia isnt casting smooth anymore?

I take apart and grease up spinning reels all the time. this time however my abu garcia isnt casting smooth. How would i go about greasing this up.

Your line may be getting old and brittle from too much saltwater use and exposure to the FL sunshine. Time to replace it. If it isn't retrieving smoothly you need to take apart and clean/lube and look for damaged or worn parts. Those big fish you catch play heck on fishing tackle.
I suspect you already know this.

Need instruction book for Abu Garcia Baitcasting STX baitcasting reel?

Looking for a instruction book on Abu Garcia STX bait casting reel. Have tried Bass Pro and Dick's Sporting goods no luck. Have done web search and still don't know what to look for. Any advise on where to find one.
